What is PBIS?
The following excerpt has been taken from a common PBIS website for an official description:
“Implementation framework for maximizing the selection and use of evidence-based prevention and intervention practices along a multi-tiered continuum that supports the academic, social, emotional, and behavioral competence of all students.” www.pbis.org
What does PBIS look like from a practical standpoint? PBIS stands for Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports. At John Muir we are working towards implementing three main components. The following will be our focus as we move forward with full implementation:
• Teach students appropriate and expected behaviors throughout campus
• Provide appropriate interventions when behavior expectations are not met
• Recognizing students when behavior expectations are met.
PBIS is a team based and school-wide design for behavior support, which includes teaching expectations and procedures in all settings. In addition, it is a multi-tiered framework that provides behavior support to improve educational outcomes for ALL STUDENTS. It is a system that is flexible in nature and ever-evolving as we go along in order to meet the needs of our student population.
At John Muir we have created a school-wide matrix dedicated to specifically define expected behaviors on certain parts of the campus. The four areas we have selected are: Playground, Cafeteria, Shared Areas and Classrooms. In each of these areas we look to teach students to be Safe, Organized, Accountable, & Respectful (S.O.A.R.). These four attributes gives students, teachers, administrators, and parents a common language in interacting with one another. As a result, this language helps all the stake holders build a more cohesive, collaborative and caring community. In the end, our hope is that it leads to a meaningful and positive future.
For the 22-23 School Year, John Muir was awarded the Gold Level for implementation of PBIS school-wide.
